Area Served[]
The Ontario Fire Department provides fire protection, fire prevention, and emergency services for the city of Ontario, located in the western part of the Inland Empire metropolitan area in southwestern San Bernardino County, California, 35 miles east of downtown Los Angeles. It takes its name from the Ontario Model Colony development established in 1882 by the Canadian engineer George Chaffey and his brothers William and Charles. They named the settlement after their home province of Ontario, Canada. The city of Ontario encompasses an area covering 50.0 square miles and serves a population of approximately 163,924, making it the third largest city in San Bernardino County. The city is also home to the Ontario International Airport, which is the 15th-busiest airport in the United States by cargo carried. Ontario is bordered by the cities of Upland and Rancho Cucamonga to the north; the City of Fontana to the east; the City of Jurupa Valley in Riverside County to the southeast; the City of Eastvale in Riverside County to the south; the City of Chino to the southwest; and the City of Montclair to the west.
History[]
The Ontario Fire Department was formed in 1892. The department is budgeted for 225 personnel comprised of 186 sworn firefighters and 39 professional staff members working out of ten fire stations, including the Ontario International Airport fire station, with a daily staffing level of 59 sworn firefighters. These fire stations house nine 4-person paramedic engine companies, three 4-person truck companies, an 8-person ARFF company, one fire investigation supervisor, and two battalion chiefs. The OFD responds to over 20,000 calls for service annually and has mutual aid agreements with the San Bernardino County Fire Department and with the cities that border Ontario, including Upland, Rancho Cucamonga, Fontana, Chino, and Montclair. Beginning in 1967, Ontario International Airport was part of the Los Angeles regional airports system and in 1985, the city of Los Angeles acquired Ontario International Airport outright from the city of Ontario. In November 2016, the Ontario International Airport Authority, formed under a joint-powers agreement between the city of Ontario and San Bernardino County, took over control of Ontario International Airport operations from the Los Angeles World Airports authority.
