Incorporated on July 3, 1888, Oceanside encompasses an area covering 42.16 square miles, and serves a population of over 180,000. The city of Oceanside is bordered by US Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton to the north; the unincorporated San Diego County community of Bonsall to the northeast; the City of Vista to the east; and the City of Carlsbad to the south.

History[]
In 1888, Oceanside Fire Company No. 1 was formed in the City of Oceanside. For the next 38 years, a series of volunteer fire companies provided protection to the community. In 1925, the City purchased Oceanside’s first motorized fire engine, an American LaFrance Type 65, Class B pumper equipped with a 40-horsepower motor and a 300-gallon-per-minute pump at a cost of $8,500. In 1926, the City re-organized the volunteer fire company into “Oceanside Engine Company Number One”. In 1939, Oceanside hired its first full-time paid firefighters, one of which would stay with the department for over 40 years, becoming its fire chief in 1963. In 1972, the first Fire Department Emergency Medical Technician and Ambulance Program was instituted. This fledgling ambulance program has grown into one of the most comprehensive and widely respected paramedic emergency medical services programs in the state. In 1976, the city began providing paramedic services to the community, and has done so ever since. On February 5, 2023, the Oceanside Fire Department took over and started operating the Marine Safety Unit from the Oceanside Police Department, with a crew consisting of a a lifeguard lieutenant on a 40-hour work week, a lifeguard sergeant, a senior beach lifeguard, and a firefighter paramedic on three 24-hour shifts, making it the first time in Oceanside‘s history that there are 24-hour lifeguard services available. On August 7, 2013, the Oceanside City Council approved a proposal to allow private company Reach Air Medical Service to station an emergency air ambulance helicopter at the Oceanside Fire Training Center.
