Area Served[]
The North Tahoe Fire Protection District (NTFPD) provides fire protection and emergency medical services for the unincorporated town of Tahoe City, as well as other unincorporated communities on the north and west shores of Lake Tahoe, the Alpine Meadows County Water District (including the communities of Alpine Meadows and Olympic Valley, formerly Squaw Valley), and under contract to the Meeks Bay Fire Protection District, all in Placer County in Northern California. In addition, NTFPD provides ambulance transport service to the community of Olympic Valley. The district encompasses an area covering 32 square miles, and has a population of nearly 15,000 inhabitants.
Mutual Aid[]
The North Tahoe Fire Protection District has mutual aid agreements with the CAL FIRE Nevada-Yuba-Placer Unit, the Northstar Fire Department, and the Olympic Valley Fire Department, South Lake Tahoe Fire Rescue, the Lake Valley Fire Protection District in El Dorado County, the Truckee Fire Protection District in Nevada County, and the North Lake Tahoe Fire Protection District in Washoe County, Nevada.

The North Tahoe Fire Protection District is budgeted for 51 sworn members, 8 non-safety full-time administrative personnel, and 3 non-safety, part-time administrative personnel, working three shifts operating on a 48/96 schedule. Total Daily Minimum Staffing is 13 to 14 personnel depending on availability. NTFPD is headed by the Office of the Fire Chief and broken into 3 divisions: Operations, Administration, and Fire Prevention & Life Safety, Stations 51, 52 and 53 are staffed by North Tahoe Fire District personnel. Station 55 is staffed by the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection / CAL FIRE Nevada-Yuba-Placer Unit personnel from May at the onset of wildfire season and typically concludes after the fall/winter rain event in October. Station 56 is staffed by North Tahoe Fire District personnel through a contract with the Alpine Springs County Water District. This station serves the communities of Alpine Meadows and Squaw Valley. Through a contract agreed upon in 2014, North Tahoe Fire Protection District provides a full-time chief officer and management of Meeks Bay’s firefighters and staffs Station 67 for fire protection, training and administrative duties. in January 2025, the Meeks Bay Fire Protection District was formally annexed and consolidated into the North Tahoe Fire District.
Dispatch[]
The North Tahoe Fire Protection District contracts dispatch to a regional fire and emergency services communication system called the Grass Valley Emergency Command Center (GVECC), jointly run by CAL FIRE and the US Forest Service and located in Grass Valley, which provides dispatch services for 30 fire agencies in Placer, El Dorado, Nevada, Plumas and Yuba counties. The ECC is staffed by one battalion chief, six fire captains, one staff services analyst and 17 communication operators.
History[]
The North Tahoe Fire Protection District was formed in 1993 from the consolidation of the Tahoe City Fire Department (Established in 1941), and the North Tahoe Fire Department (Established in 1957).
