History[]
The Town of Nickel Centre was formed in 1973 through the creation of the Regional Municipality of Sudbury, amalgamating the Townships of Falconbridge and Neelon-Garson and the Town of Coniston. The following departments were merged to create the NCFD:
- Coniston Fire Department
- Falconbridge Township Fire Department
- Neelon-Garson Township Fire Department
In 2001, the Nickel Centre Fire Department was amalgamated with other area municipalities to form the City of Greater Sudbury Fire Services. At amalgamation, Nickel Centre had a population of approximately 13,000 people. The fire department had a full-time chief and 80+ volunteers at five stations.
