History[]
The Newell Fire Department was the fifth volunteer fire department in Mecklenburg. The community began working to organize the department in April 1950, after a ten-room house in Newell was destroyed by fire. The department began operating on December 15, 1950. The department initially operated out of a service station on Old Concord Road before building a station behind that location in 1973.
The Newell Fire Department ceased operation on June 30, 2011. The department disbanded after declining revenue, higher costs, and annexations by the City of Charlotte had taken most of the Newell fire district. The Charlotte Fire Department now provides service for what remained of the district in the still unincorporated area of the county. The Newell Fire Department donated their assets to other departments.
