History[]
Naval Station Argentia was a United States Navy base located near what is now the Town of Placentia, Newfoundland. Opened in 1941 as part of the Destroyers for Bases agreement between the United States and United Kingdom, Naval Station Argentia served as a naval air base and anchorage during the Second World War. During the Cold War, it was maintained as a naval facility. In 1973, Naval Air Station Argentia was decommissioned and the land transferred in 1975 to the Government of Canada. It was subsequently transferred to the provincial government for development. In 1994 the US Navy left Argentia completely when Naval Station Argentia was decommissioned and the last personnel moved out. [1]
