Area Served[]

Moffett Federal Airfield, also known as Moffett Field, and formerly NAS Sunnyvale and NAS Moffett Field, is a joint civil-military airport located in an unincorporated part of Santa Clara County, part of California's Silicon Valley, near the south end of San Francisco Bay between the cities of Mountain View and Sunnyvale and northwest of the city San Jose. Moffett Field is named in honor of US Navy Rear Admiral William Adger Moffett (October 31, 1869 – April 4, 1933), known as the architect of naval aviation in the United States Navy, who lost his life in the crash of the US Navy's helium-filled rigid airship / dirigible USS Akron (ZRS-4) in the Atlantic Ocean during a storm off the coast of New Jersey. Formerly a US Navy air station, Moffett is now owned and operated by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) Ames Research Center. NASA Ames is named in honor of Joseph Sweetman Ames (July 3, 1864 – June 24, 1943), a physicist and one of the founding members of NASA's predecessor, the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics (NACA). Ames Research Center was founded to conduct wind-tunnel research on the aerodynamics of propeller-driven aircraft; however, its role has expanded to encompass spaceflight and information technology. Besides NASA, Moffett is regularly used by the California Air National Guard, Lockheed Martin Space Systems (commercial satellite manufacturer), the Google founders for their private business jets, the Santa Clara County Sheriff's Department for their helicopter STAR 1, and Air Force One during presidential visits to the Bay Area.

History[]

In 1930, the city of Sunnyvale acquired a 1,000-acre parcel of farmland bordering San Francisco Bay, paid for with nearly US$480,000 raised by the citizens of Santa Clara County, then "sold" the parcel for $1 to the US government as a home base for the Navy airship USS Macon. The location proved to be ideal for an airport, since the area is often clear while other parts of the San Francisco Bay are covered in fog. A naval air station, initially known as NAS Sunnyvale, was commissioned on April 12, 1933 to support a “lighter-than-air” (LTA) program. It was renamed NAS Moffett Field on May 18, 1933 however, was turned over to the Army between October 1935 and April 16, 1942. Also in 1939, Moffett saw the establishment of the Ames Aeronautical Laboratory on the northwest side of Moffett Field, which later became NASA Ames Research Center. NAS Moffett Field was closed as a naval air station in July 1994 and turned over to the NASA Ames Research Center.
