History[]

“The 12th fire Department to be formed in the county was Mud Creek Fire and Rescue. First mentioned in The Floyd County Times on July 19, 1978. They were formed due to the lack of adequate fire coverage in the areas of mud creek, little mud and Toler Creek. Fund raising activities were started to provide monies for a truck and a station. Land was donated and a station was built. Some time later a second station was also built on land donated to the department. Mud Creek is the name of the actual creek (Not the area) that runs from the top of Ligon Hill to Harold where it flows into the Levisa Fork of the Big Sandy River. There are several communities along the creek as well as several hollows off the creek. It is unknown why or when people first settled in the area but like most all other areas saw a booming mining industry although a rail road was never laid in the area. The department has shown an ability to adapt to the needs of their area. When the need for an ambulance in the area was realized they answered and purchased a used ambulance. It was in service just a short time until it was stolen and destroyed. Though they were not able to replace the ambulance they still carried on with EMS personnel responding to the calls for help. Today Mud Creek Fire and Rescue operates 3 engines, 1 pumper/tanker, 1 tanker, 1 rescue truck and a support vehicle out of two stations. Station one is located at Grethel and station two at Teaberry. Though the areas of Little Mud and Toler Creek are no longer covered by the Department they still provide fire protection and rescue services for the areas of Grethel, Craynor, Teaberry, Beaver, Tinker Fork, Tackett Fork, Branhams Creek and other areas along Mud Creek.” - Floyd County Firefighters Association
