History[]

The Mountain View Fire Department was created on April 1, 1874, when volunteer Mountain View Station Hook & Ladder Co. No. 1 was formed. In the spring of 1928, the citizens living on the outskirts of Mountain View had an election to create a new fire district which resulted in the creation of the Fremont Fire District on July 11, 1928. A new headquarters station was completed in 1953 at Villa and Franklin Streets. This station replaced the station “Firehouse at Waterworks” which was dedicated in 1924. In 1958, Mountain View was the first fire department in Santa Clara County to implement a rescue unit concept. The volunteer firefighters in Mountain View were disbanded in 1964 and replaced by a fully paid professional fire department as exists today. The Mountain View Fire Department is the only fire department in Santa Clara County, and one of a limited view departments in California, to have maintained an ISO Class 1 rating.
