Profile[]

The Mount Mourne Fire Department is a combination department, utilizing volunteers and part-time staff to protect about 8,000 residents living in an area of 18 square miles at the southern end of Iredell County. They operate from a single station, averaging more than 1300 calls per year. Mount Mourne Fire Department has been awarded an ISO Rating of 4 by the NC DOI Office of State Fire Marshals Office.

History[]

The Mount Mourne Fire Department was chartered on March 17, 1955. In May of that year, 2 board members went to the Iredell County Board of Commissioners with a petition for a fire truck. A truck was given to the department, a Dodge pumper that had been used by Troutman Fire & Rescue. The fire department membership outfitted the pumper with needed equipment

Initially, there was no notification system. Citizens were given names and numbers of the firemen to call in case of an emergency. Once a member was notified, he was responsible for notifying the other members of the department. In 1967, mobile radios were installed in the trucks, with a base radio at fire house.

In 2000, the Board of Directors approved a request from the Fire Chief to employ one part-time firefighter position to work Monday thru Friday from 8AM to 5PM. On August 1, 2000, Mount Mourne became the first volunteer fire department in Iredell County to staff with part-time firefighters.

In 2003, construction began on a new fire station at the intersection of Mecklenburg Highway and Langtree Road. The new fire station was completed, dedicated, and occupied in January of 2004.

In 2013, weekday part-time staff was increased to 3 firefighters and in December, the Iredell County Board of Commissioners granted Mount Mourne rescue district status.
