About[]

The Moscow Rural Fire District protects about 128 square miles in Latah County, Idaho. Moscow Rural, as it is commonly referred to, also covers the city of Viola, Idaho. The department operates out of two stations, the first is located in the same lot as Moscow Volunteer Fire Department Station 2 on 1300 White Avenue. This is the main station of Moscow Rural Fire District, it is a 5 bay station which houses 7 apparatus, the brush trucks are commonly parked in between doors and respond after the first out engine. Moscow Rural Fire District jointly operates out of Moscow Volunteer Fire Station 3. Station 3 is a 6 bay station which houses 3 rural and 3 city apparatus. Emergency Medical Services are provided by MVFD's Ambulance Company and rescue (extrication and technical rescue) services are provided by MVFD's Rescue Company. The department does not staff its stations, with the exception being during times of peak volume such as large storms. Members are alerted via voice pager and/or radio and notify dispatch that they are responding to either station or directly to the scene (this practice is discouraged). Law enforcement in the area is provided by the Latah County Sherrifs Office and the Idaho State Police .

Staffing[]

Staffing for the Moscow Rural Fire District is provided by members of the Moscow Volunteer Fire Department. Members must fulfill their six month probationary period with their assigned suppression company and have been on the department as a member in good standing for another six months prior to applying for vacancies within the 'Rural Company.' Members are voted into the company by its current members after an interview process. After acceptance into the company members are placed on probationary status for 6 months. This does not affect their status within the city fire department.

Members of the Moscow Volunteer Fire Department who are not also members of the Rural Company may also respond to calls with the fire district but they must respond to station and are only used as supplementary staffing.
