Area Served[]
The Montclair Fire Department (MFD) provides fire protection and emergency medical services for the City of Montclair, formerly Monte Vista, located in the Pomona Valley, between the San Gabriel Valley and the Inland Empire region of southwestern San Bernardino County, in Southern California. The city's name is derived from the French mont clair, meaning "clear mountain" or "bright mountain," due to the community's close proximity to the San Gabriel Mountains. Incorporated as a city on April 25, 1956, Montclair encompasses an area covering 5.53 square miles and serves a population of approximately 36,664 inhabitants. Montclair is bordered by the City of Upland, as well as the City of Claremont in Los Angeles County, to the north; the City of Ontario to the east; the City of Chino to the south; and the City of Pomona in Los Angles County to the west.
Mutual Aid[]
The Montclair Fire Department has mutual aid agreements with the San Bernardino County Fire Department, the Chino Valley Fire District, the Ontario Fire Department, the Rialto Fire Department, the Rancho Cucamonga Fire District, and the Los Angeles County Fire Department.
Department Profile[]
MFD is budgeted for 21 full-time fire suppression personnel consisting of three battalion chiefs, six fire captains, five fire engineers, and seven firefighter/paramedics who work three alternating 48-hour shifts out of two fire stations. The Fire Chief, the Deputy Fire Chief, along with an administrative technician and an office specialist work a normal work week supporting the Montclair Fire Department.
Dispatch[]
The Montclair Fire Department contracts dispatch to a regional fire and emergency services communication system called CONFIRE Joint Powers Authority (JPA), commonly referred to as "Comm Center", and located in the City of Rialto, which provides dispatch services for nine fire agencies, as well as for four contract agencies in San Bernardino County.
History[]
The first Fire Department in then Monte Vista was formed by the San Bernardino County Board of Supervisors years in July of 1948, and was known as the Monte Vista County Fire Protection District. In 1949, a $50,000 bond issue was approved for the construction of a fire station and to purchase equipment. In October 1950, the first fire station, located at 10585 Central Avenue, was completed, housing two fire trucks. Three full-time firemen were employed, augmented by 13 on-call men. The Fire District consisted of the area between the cities of Pomona and Ontario, covering approximately 6.5 square miles. It was bounded on the north by Ninth Street in Upland and on the south by Phillips Boulevard. The District's population consisted of approximately 5,000 residents and it had an assessed valuation of $3.5 million.
The three paid individuals worked a 72-hour workweek, on a 24-hour shift schedule. When an alarm was received, the person on duty would write the address on a blackboard and sound the recall siren. He would then respond by himself in a 1948 Ford high-pressure unit. The call-personnel would respond to the fire station, read the address on the blackboard, and respond with a 1943 pumper to the fire. On January 1, 1967, the City of Montclair assumed the entire fire department operation, including the unincorporated area served by the Monte Vista Fire Protection District.
On January 1, 2014.[1], Montclair and the neighboring City of Upland combined their fire departments in a partial merger for a two-year period under the name Upland-Montclair Fire Department. Under the parameters, the command staff and administration of the two departments became one, and the service boundaries separating the departments were eliminated. Each department maintained its own identity and retained responsibility for its own firefighters. In early 2016 after the two-year period ended, Upland decided to exit the partnership, disband their fire department and annex into the San Bernardino County Fire Department for fire protection. Effective December 1, 2016, the City of Montclair once again began operating its own fire department.
