Overview[]

The Monroe Fire Department is a career department that protects the City of Monroe and its approximately 35,000 residents that live in the 30 square mile area. The Department operates out of five fire stations and is in the planning phases to build a sixth station to cover the northwest area of the city.  The department has an authorized strength of 87 FT staff and responds to approximately 7,000 calls for service a year.  The department recently earned Accredited Agency status through the Commission on Fire Accreditation International (CFAI) and has an ISO class rating of 2.

The department provides fire suppression services, technical rescue, medical first responder and Hazmat services.  Additionally, the department provides aviation firefighting and rescue protection for the Charlotte-Monroe Executive Airport. Station 4 is on the airport perimeter and serves as an ARFF station. The airport is classified for general aviation use and and is designated a primary reliever for the Charlotte-Douglas International Airport.

History[]

The Monroe Fire Department was originally established in 1872 as a volunteer organization and transitioned to a career department throughout the years. The first record of paid personnel was in 1914.

In the 1980s, the Monroe Fire Department merged with the Monroe Police Department to create the Monroe Public Safety Department. Public safety officers performed both duties of firefighter and police officer. This type of service became a strain on the department as the community grew and service demand was increased.  In 1999, the Police and Fire Departments were separated.

In 2002, the department opened a temporary station (Station 4) to provide services for the western section of the city and the Charlotte-Monroe Executive Airport.  A new station building was completed in 2016 with direct access to the airfield.

In 2003, the department purchased the Crestview/Unionville Volunteer Fire Department station located on Highway 601 North and conducted a full construction renovation to convert the facility to a career station (Station 5).  The renovation was completed in 2006.
