Area Served[]

The City of Mississauga, historically known as Toronto Township, is located in the southern portion of the Regional Municipality of Peel. It was established as a town in 1968 through the merging of the villages of Clarkson, Cooksville, Lakeview, Lorne Park, Malton, Meadowvale, and Toronto Township. Mississauga was reincorporated as a city in 1974 through municipal restructuring and the Towns of Port Credit and Streetsville were amalgamated. The City of Mississauga is bordered by Lake Ontario to the south, the City of Toronto to the east, the City of Brampton to the north, and the Towns of Milton and Oakville to the west. Today, Mississauga covers 292.43 km2 of mostly urban terrain and has a population of over 800,000, making it the seventh-most populous city in Canada.

History[]

The Mississauga Fire Department was established in 1968 upon the formation of the Town of Mississauga. The new town consisted of the former Township of Toronto, which had existed since 1850. Before the early 1950s, fire protection in the township was provided by several local fire brigades. These were:

In 1954, Toronto Township hired a full-time chief and amalgamated the local brigades as the Toronto Township Fire Department. By 1967, the Township operated five stations with 70 full-time firefighters and 52 volunteers.

After the Town of Mississauga was created, the Port Credit Fire Department and Streetsville Fire Department became part of MFD as part of the municipal restructuring that created Peel Region in 1974. At the same time, the town was reincorporated as the City of Mississauga. The first station to open as the Mississauga Fire Department was the original Fire Station 6 (later renumbered 106, now demolished). By 1975, Mississauga's fire service became a full-time career department and the name was eventually changed to Mississauga Fire & Emergency Services (MFES).
