Area Served[]
The Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority (MWAA) is an independent airport authority, created with the consent of the United States Congress to oversee management, operations, and capital development of the two major airports serving the US national capital: Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport and Dulles International Airport. The authority leases the airports from the United States Department of Transportation. The US government originally built the airports and continues to own the underlying airport property except for property acquired by MWAA subsequent to the lease. The authority's headquarters is located less than 1 mile from Reagan National Airport in the Crystal City neighborhood of Arlington County, Virginia. Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport, also known as National Airport, Washington National, Reagan National Airport, DCA, Reagan, or simply National, is located in Arlington, Virginia, across the Potomac River from Washington, DC. It is the smaller of the two airports. The larger airport is Washington Dulles International Airport, typically referred to as Dulles International Airport, Dulles Airport, Washington Dulles or simply Dulles, located in Loudoun County and Fairfax County, also in Virginia, 26 miles west of Downtown Washington, DC.
Mutual Aid[]
The Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority provides mutual-aid services to surrounding agencies including, among others, the Arlington County Fire Department, Fairfax County Fire and Rescue Department, Loudoun County Fire and Rescue Department, Alexandria Fire Department (Virginia), and the District of Columbia Fire & Emergency Medical Services, under a Memorandum of Understanding signed by fourteen jurisdictions in Northern Virginia. As an example, firefighters from National Airport were among the first responders to the Pentagon following the crash of American Airlines Flight 77 on September 11, 2001.
Department Profile[]
The Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority Fire Rescue provides aircraft rescue and firefighting, structural firefighting, emergency medical services (basic and advanced life support), river rescue (at Ronald Reagan National Airport), technical rescue, hazardous materials emergency response, fire prevention and inspection for both Reagan and Dulles Airports. The department is comprised of 163 personnel, consisting of 16 chief officers, 27 fire officers, 21 master firefighters, 90 firefighters and 9 civilian staff.
History[]
The Airports Authority Fire & Rescue Department was formed from the Federal Aviation Administration's Aircraft Rescue and Firefighting Branch when the Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority was established in 1987 to operate Ronald Reagan Washington National and Washington Dulles International Airports.
