Area Served[]

The Marin County Fire Department (MCFD) provides fire protection and emergency medical services for the county of Marin, a large, southward-facing peninsula located in the northwestern part of the San Francisco Bay Area, across the Golden Gate Bridge from San Francisco, in Northern California. The county was named for "Marin," great chief of the Licatiut tribe, a branch of the Coast Miwok indigenous people. The County of Marin was incorporated on September 1, 1906, encompasses an area covering 828 square miles, and serves a population of approximately 262,231. Marin County is bordered by Sonoma County to the north; and surrounded by water on three sides; the Pacific Ocean on the west; the Golden Gate Strait on the south; and San Francisco Bay, with estuaries San Pablo Bay and San Rafael Bay, on the east.

The Marin County Fire Department has mutual aid agreements with the Bolinas Fire Protection District, the Central Marin Fire Department, the Golden Gate National Recreation Area Fire Department, the Inverness Volunteer Fire Department (California), the Marin Municipal Water District, the Muir Beach Volunteer Fire Department, the Novato Fire Protection District, the Ross Valley Fire Department, the Skywalker Ranch Fire Brigade, the Southern Marin Fire Protection District, the Stinson Beach Fire Protection District, the CAL FIRE Sonoma-Lake-Napa Unit, the Gold Ridge Fire Protection District, the San Antonio Volunteer Fire Department, the Sonoma County Fire District, the USCG Training Center Petaluma Fire Department, the Wilmar Volunteer Fire Department, the last six all located in Sonoma County, and the National Park Service - Point Reyes National Seashore Fire Management

Department Profile[]

The Marin County Fire Department is budgeted for 145 full time/paid firefighters, augmented by reserve/seasonal firefighters, who provide structural and wildland firefighting, emergency medical services, advanced life support (ALS), technical rescue, hazardous materials mitigation, fire prevention, fire investigation, code enforcement, disaster preparedness, and public education out of six fire stations to the citizens of unincorporated Marin County. The Marin County Water Rescue unit operates as a component of the US&R Team, is classified as a Type I Swiftwater/Flood Search and Rescue Team (SF S&R), and is designated as CA SF S&R Team 11.

History[]

The first formal fire department in what is now Marin County was the Tamalpais Forestry Association, formed around the turn of the 19th century. The California State Legislature had been discussing legislation for forest-fire suppression as early as 1881, but the formal department did not come into being until approximately 1901. The Marin County Fire Department came into existence in its current incarnation on July 1, 1941, with passage of an ordinance and two resolutions by the Marin County Board of Supervisors.
