The Mammoth Lakes Fire Protection District (MLFPD ) operates as the Mammoth Lakes Fire Department and provides fire protection and emergency medical services for the town of Mammoth Lakes, as well as the Mammoth Lakes area, located in the southwestern, mountainous part of Mono County, just off Highway 395 on the eastern side of the Sierra Nevada mountains, in Northern California. The area covered by the MLFPD encompasses 24 square miles, while serving a population of approximately 7,500 inhabitants which can swell to over 40,000 during peak tourist season weekends and holiday periods.

The Mammoth Lakes Fire Department has mutual aid agreements the following organizations withi Mono County: the Chalfant Valley Fire Department, the Antelope Valley Fire Protection District, the June Lake Fire Department, the Long Valley Fire Protection District (Mono County, California), the Mono County Volunteers, and the Wheeler Crest Fire Protection District, in Inyo County; the Big Pine Fire Protection District (California), the Bishop Volunteer Fire Department, the Independence Volunteer Fire Department (California), the Lone Pine Fire Department (California), the Olancha-Cartago Fire Department, and the White Mountain Fire Department, as well as with the CAL FIRE San Bernardino Unit and the United States Forest Service / Inyo National Forest Fire Suppression.

Department Profile[]

The Mammoth Lakes Fire Protection District is a combination career/volunteer fire department consisting of eight full-time firefighters, as well as approximately 45 part-time and volunteer employees. Daily staffing includes a duty chief and a two-to-three person engine company. Station 1 houses the administrative offices and full-time staff, and Station 2 functions as a training center and staging area for the called up part-time/volunteer firefighters.
