Overview[]
The MIFD protects the small, 4-sq. mile island of Mackinac, located in the Mackinac Straits between Michigan's Upper and Lower Peninsula. With a year-round population of just 585 people, Mackinac Island is a popular resort destination, drawing thousands of tourists annually. A unique thing about the island is that it is famously car and motor-vehicle free, with the only exceptions made for emergency and other city-service vehicles. As a result of that, tourists and residents mainly get around by horse & carriage, walking, and biking. Mackinac is also known for its' numerous historic buildings, with the entire island being designated a National Historic Landmark (as well over 80% of the island being designated as a state park).
