The R-Series was a conventional Class 8 heavy-duty chassis manufactured by Mack Trucks Inc. 381 fire trucks were produced using this chassis between 1966 and 1990, when Mack stopped offering custom chassis for fire apparatus (Mack stopped building complete trucks in 1984, but offered the R (and other) chassis to other builders until 1990). Later versions, made from the 1990s to the early 2000s, were known as the Mack RD. The R-Series was eventually succeeded by the Mack Granite line in 2001, which is still in production today.
