Luke AFB Fire Department

Area Served[]

Luke Air Force Base, formerly Litchfield Park Air Base, is a United States Air Force installation located 7 miles west of the central business district of Glendale, and about 15 miles west of Phoenix in Maricopa County, Arizona. The base was renamed Luke Field on June 6, 1941 in honor of Phoenix native, Second Lieutenant Frank Luke Jr. (May 19, 1897 – September 29, 1918), the first aviator to receive the Medal of Honor (posthumously) and the number two United States ace in World War I. Colloquially known as the "Arizona Balloon Buster." Lieutenant Luke scored 18 aerial victories, 14 against German observation balloons, before being killed at the age of 21 on September 29, 1918. Luke Field was designated Luke Air Force Base on June 10, 1949 and today is a major training base of the Air Education and Training Command (AETC). The host unit at Luke is the 56th Fighter Wing "Thunderbolts" which trains F-35 (US and allied) and F-16 (US) fighter pilots and maintainers. Luke AFB employs 4,803 active duty, 1,408 reserve and 1,203 civilian personnel.
