Locally-built fire apparatus refers to apparatus bodies built by small companies in the vicinity of the fire department (usually auto body or mechanic shops, metalworking shops, truck equipment outfitters, etc). In most cases, they are of relatively basic construction, usually tanker, rescue, brush, or other such trucks. The term "local" is used in cases where the actual name of the company is unknown.
