Area Served[]

The Laguna Beach Fire Department (LBFD) provides fire protection and emergency medical services for the city of Laguna Beach, a seaside resort city located in southern Orange County, California, located some 50 miles south of Los Angeles. Laguna is Spanish Spanish for "Lagoon." Incorporated as a city on June 29, 1927, it encompasses an area covering 9.86 square miles, and serves a population of approximately 23,032. The City of Laguna Beach is bordered by California Crystal Cove State Park and the City of Newport Beach on the northwest, the the unincorporated Orange County community of Laguna Woods on the northeast, the cities of Aliso Viejo and Laguna Niguel on the east, the City of Dana Point on the southeast, and the Pacific Ocean on the southwest. All of these, with the exception of Newport Beach which has its own fire department, receive fire protection from the Orange County Fire Authority.

Mutual Aid[]

Laguna Beach FD has mutual aid agreements with the Orange County Fire Authority (California), the Newport Beach Fire Department, and the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection.

Department Profile[]

The Laguna Beach Fire Department is budgeted for 39 sworn employees and has a daily staffing of 12 firefighters. Its resources include four fire stations and seven front-line emergency apparatus. These are comprised of four engine companies, two BLS transport ambulances, and one battalion chief vehicle, working three 24-hour rotating shifts. Each fire engine is staffed with one captain, one engineer, and one firefighter; with at least one member of the crew certified as a paramedic. LBFD also cross staffs a rescue squad, two type-3 wildland engine companies, and an OES Type-3 wildland engine company. Laguna Beach Fire responds to over 5,000 calls annually, with over 80% consisting of EMS calls.

History[]

The Laguna Beach Fire Department was established in 1919 with current Fire Station 1 being built in 1931 and still operational today. Over the years, the Laguna Beach Fire Department has grown from one fire station to four fire stations with paramedic service operating from all four.  In July of 2022, Laguna Beach Fire Department added Emergency Ambulance service to the community. On June 15, 2022, the Laguna Beach City Council authorized the city manager to enter into an agreement with Rincon Consultants Inc. in the amount of $89,199 to provide consulting services for the preparation of an initial study for the acquisition of 31727 Coast Highway for future civic uses, including as a replacement for the neighborhood’s local fire station, LBFD Fire Station 4.
