Area Served[]
The La Mesa Fire Department served the City of La Mesa, located 9 miles east of downtown San Diego in eastern San Diego County, Southern California. The name is Spanish for "the table," or alternately "the plateau," relating to its geography. La Mesa was incorporated on February 16, 1912, has a total area of 9.10 square miles, and a population of 61,121 inhabitants.
History[]
The La Mesa Fire Department was formed in 1919. On January 1, 2010, the La Mesa Fire Department, the El Cajon Fire Department and the Lemon Grove Fire Department entered into a Joint Powers Agreement to form Heartland Fire & Rescue.
