Area Served[]

The Kings County Fire Department (KFD) provides fire protection and emergency medical services to the unincorporated areas of Kings County, as well as under contract to the cities of Avenal and Corcoran, located in the San Joaquin Valley region of Central California. Established on March 22, 1893, the county was formed from the western part of Tulare County and from 208 square miles of southeast Fresno County, with the City of Hanford as the county seat. Its name was derived from the nearby Kings River. Unincorporated Placer County encompasses an area covering approximate 1,392 square mile, and serves a population of approximately 153,000 residents. Kings County is bordered by Fresno County on the north and northwest; by Tulare County on the east; by Kern County and a small part of San Luis Obispo County on the south; and by Monterey County on the west.

Mutual Aid[]

KFD has mutual aid agreements with the CAL FIRE Fresno-Kings Unit, the Avenal State Prison Fire Department, the Hanford Fire Department, the Lemoore Volunteer Fire Department, and the Naval Air Station Lemoore Fire Department

Department Profile[]

The Kings County Fire Department is budgeted for 88 full time/paid firefighters, in addition to up to 30 volunteer firefighters, operating out of ten fire stations and one fire headquarters, providing structural and wildland firefighting, emergency medical services (EMS), technical rescue, including swift water rescue, hazardous materials mitigation, fire prevention, fire investigation, code enforcement, disaster preparedness, and public education to the citizens of unincorporated Kings County. Daily staffing consists of twenty-five on-duty personnel (one battalion chief, eight fire captains, twelve fire apparatus engineers, and four firefighters), augmented by volunteer firefighters working two 24-hours shifts or days in a row followed by 96-hours or four days off. Fire Administration is comprised of eleven professionals: one county fire chief, one assistant fire chief, five battalion chiefs (three in the Operations Division, one in Training, and one in the Fire Prevention Division), one executive secretary, one fiscal specialist, one emergency services coordinator, and one emergency services specialist. In addition, the Kings County Office of Emergency Management is a division within the Kings County Fire Department and is responsible for coordinating multi-agency responses to complex, large-scale emergencies and disasters within the Kings County operational area. The Kings County Fire Department does not provide EMS and ambulance transport services as part of its mandate. All EMS and transport is provided under a county contract by American Ambulance of Kings County. The Kings County Fire Department responds to over 5,100 calls annually, averaging nearly 14 calls daily.
