Kaiser Jeep was created from the merger of Kaiser Motors and Willys-Overland Company in 1953. In 1955 the company phased out all Kaiser and Willys passenger cars and became focused on Jeep Products. In 1963 the company consolidated all business units under the name Kaiser Jeep Corporation. In 1964 the company purchased the Studebaker "General Products Division".

Following this consolidation, American Motors Corporation (AMC) began negotiations for purchase of the company, and the deal was finalized in 1970. Kaiser Jeep became Jeep Corporation a wholly owned subsidiary of AMC. In 1971, AMC spun off its General Products Division of Jeep as a wholly owned subsidiary and renamed it AM General Corporation. AMC ceased operating as an independent manufacturer in 1982 when a controlling interest was bought by Renault.
