The Renegade was a custom cab/chassis produced by KME Fire Apparatus between (approximately) 1986 and 2003.
The Renegade was available in two cab configurations. The 97" wide square tilt cab and the 96" wide contour tilt cab which was released around 1993. Both cabs could be configured as a SFD (rear entrance doors behind the cab), or a MFD or LFD. The square cab was offered until 2003.
The Renegade cabs were used for the P-22 and P-24 model pumpers for the USAF in the 1990's. The square cab was the second version while the contour cab was the third version released around 1993-1994.[1]
The chassis was also the foundation for the KME Flameshield Interface pumper in the late 1990's. The pumper used a customized version of the square cab which maximized firefighter safety.
A low-profile aerial version of the Renegade chassis was available in only two configurations: Medium Four Door with single or tandem axles, and Long Four Door with a tandem axle. Most notably, the cab could be manufactured with a 12" notched raised roof that extended over the officer and driver area.
When the KME Excel cab/chassis was released in 1996, the Renegade was given a redesigned grill that matched the Excel. Because of this, it makes it difficult to identify a post-1996 Renegade from an Excel. The Excel's windshield, however, has a larger separation in the center than the Renegade's (except the Renegade low-profile cab). A combination of an Excel cab on a Renegade chassis was also available, the merger forming the model name Renegade Excel.
