Department Overview[]

The Johnston-Grimes Metropolitan Fire Department (JGMFD) provides fire suppression, technical rescue, and emergency medical services to the cities of Johnston and Grimes, Camp Dodge (Iowa National Guard), large portions of Saylorville Lake, and unincorporated areas of Polk and Dallas County. It operates out of 3 stations between the 2 cities and runs roughly 3,000 calls annually.

Following the department merger, the JGMFD has worked to unify their fleet into a single color scheme: black over red. Pre-existing units from Johnston are painted white over yellow and for Grimes, white over red. These units will not be recolored and will remain in service until their replacement.

History[]

In 2016, the Johnston Fire Department and the Grimes Fire & Rescue Department merged into one agency for better coverage and resources for the two communities. Following the consolidation, the JGMFD also took over fire/EMS operations for Camp Dodge from the National Guard, replacing the Camp Dodge Fire Department. It is the first agency in the Des Moines metro to be a regional department and has spurred multiple consolidation conversations in other area departments.

The JGMFD also propelled the Rescue-Engine concept in Central Iowa. RE371 and RE391 are equipped to perform engine, truck, heavy rescue and EMS operations.
