Area Served[]
The Idaho Falls Fire Department (IFFD) provides fire protection and emergency medical services for the City of Idaho Falls, formerly known as Taylor's Crossing and Eagle Rock, as well as for Bonneville County Fire Protection District #1 outside of the City of Ammo. Idaho Falls is located along the banks of the Snake River in Bonneville County, Eastern Idaho. Besides Idaho Falls and Bonneville County Fire Protection District #1, IFFD's EMS Division also provides emergency medical services to portions of adjacent Jefferson and Bingham counties. The city's name is derived from the rapids and waterfalls located on the Snake River below the Utah & Northern Railway Bridge. Incorporated as a city in 1891, Idaho Falls has a population of approximately 69,000 inhabitants, and encompasses an area covering 290 square miles. Including its EMS Division, IFFD's population and coverage area totals approximately 155,000 inhabitants in a 3,500 square mile area which includes Idaho Falls Regional Airport/Fanning Field. Idaho Falls is bordered by the unincorporated community of Osgood to the northwest; by the unincorporated community of Coltman to the north; by the City of Ucon and the unincorporated community of Beachs Corner to the northeast; by the City of Ammon, the unincorporated community of Lincoln, and the Targhee National Forest to the east; by the unincorporated community of Cotton to the south; and by the unincorporated community of New Sweden to the west.
Mutual Aid[]
The Idaho Falls Fire Department has mutual aid agreements with the Bonneville County Fire District No. 1, the Central Fire District (Idaho), the Swan Valley Fire District 2 (Idaho), the Ucon Fire Department, the Upper Snake Interagency Wildfire Group (USIWG), the Caribou County Fire Department (Idaho) in neighboring Caribou County, the Blackfoot Fire Department (Idaho), as well as the Shelley Firth Rural Fire District in neighboring Bingham County, and the BLM Idaho Falls District.
Department Profile[]
The Idaho Falls Fire Department is budgeted for 138 full-time personnel operating out of six stations. Its resources include 16 front-line emergency apparatus. These are comprised of eight engine companies, two aerial ladder truck companies, twelve paramedic rescue ambulances, and one battalion chief vehicle, working three 48-hour alternating shifts. IFFD also cross staffs one regional Hazmat response vehicle, six wildland vehicles, eight water tenders (3 of which are HEMTTs), and eleven support vehicles. In 2022, Idaho Falls Fire responded to 17,070 calls for service. Of those calls, 14,248 were EMS in nature.
History[]
A volunteer fire department was formed in 1885 following a fire in the city, which was then Eagle Rock. The city received its first horse-drawn apparatus and paid driver in 1907, a career chief in 1909 and its first motorized apparatus, an American LaFrance, in 1916. The department expanded with the city, buying its first ladder truck in 1930. In 1966, the city began providing fire protection to 390 square miles of the county. The IFFD provided ambulance service starting in 1970, trained EMTs from 1971 and paramedics from 1973. ARFF capability was added in 1975 and a hazmat team in 1992. The IFFD moved out of its longtime headquarters in 2017 and earned an ISO 2 rating the same year. In July 2022, the city of Idaho Falls hired Pro-Tec Fire Services to handle ARFF operations at Idaho Falls Regional Airport. This took effect on October 1, 2022, and resulted in IFFD moving its personnel, airport engine company, ambulance and associated equipment to their new Fire Station No. 7, a former Bonneville County Fire Protection District station.
