In 1908 the BC Wood Pulp & Paper Company opened a pulp & paper mill at the mouth of the Rainy River in Port Mellon BC. In 1927 the company name changed to Howe Sound Pulp & Paper. The mill was purchased by Canfor Forest Products in 1950 and in 1988 Oji Paper of Japan entered into a joint venture ownership of the mill with Canfor. The mill was later sold to the current owner Paper Excellence, who now operates the mill under the Domtar name, which is a sister company owned by Paper Excellence.
