Department Profile[]

The Town of Holly Springs Fire Department (HSFD) provides fire and rescue services within the Town (15.14 square miles) and the approximately 20.49 square miles of unincorporated Wake County known as the Holly Spring Rural part of the county-wide rural fire district. The department is a career department, utilizing both full and part time staff. The department has an ISO Class 1 Public Protection Classification rating from the North Carolina Department of Insurance.

History[]

Located in southern Wake County, the Town of Holly Springs was established in 1877. The town remained a small, rural town with no organized fire services for nearly 100 years. On 21 July 1971, the Holly Springs Rural Fire Department was organized. Their first fire station was a two-bay building at 1140 Avent Ferry Road and their first fire apparatus included a 1953 GMC tanker and a 1955 International tanker.

It was not until the town built its first sewage plant in 1987 that any real growth occurred. With the new infrastructure, the population of the town increased from less than 1,000 in 1992 to an estimated 6,000 in 1998 to nearly 25,000 in 2010. Today, the town has a population of approximately 35,000.

With the growth came increased demand for services and in 1995, the municipal fire department was formed. The department was named Holly Springs Fire Service Division, part of Holly Springs Department of Public Safety. The new department operated out of a temporary facility at Omaha Meat Company at the corner of Thomas Mill Road and Irving Parkway until their first station was completed at 127 North Main Street in September of 1995.

In 1997, the municipal and rural fire departments merged. The Rural station was designated Station No. 1, the municipal station was designated Station No. 2.

In 1997, the department constructed an aerial apparatus from a 1980's Kodiak 55' bucket truck donated by Carolina Power and Light. The apparatus was utilized as a master stream at one fire before being sold to Swepsonville Volunteer Fire Department.
