The Hemet Fire Department provides fire protection and emergency medical services for the City of Hemet, formerly known as South San Jacinto, located in the San Jacinto Valley, in western Riverside County, Southern California, 80 miles southeast of downtown Los Angeles. Hemet takes its name from the Lake Hemet Land Company. Incorporated as a city in January 1910, Hemet encompasses an area covering 29.3 square miles, including the Hemet-Ryan Airport, owned by Riverside County, and a main CAL FIRE Air Attack base, and the 5,000-seat Ramona Bowl amphitheater, and serves a population of approximately 90,436 inhabitants. The city is bordered by the City of San Jacinto and the San Jacinto Mountains to the north, by the Soboba Band of Luiseño Indians federal tribe to the northeast, by the unincorporated communities of Valle Vista and East Hemet to the east, by Polly Butte Mountain, as well as the man-made Diamond Valley Lake to the south, by the unincorporated community of Winchester to the southwest, and by the unincorporated communities of Green Acres, Homeland, and Juniper Springs to the west.

Department Profile[]

The Hemet Fire Department is budgeted for 54 sworn employees and 18 non-sworn support/administrative staff, and has a daily staffing of 20 firefighters. The department's management team consists of a fire chief, a division chief, a chief building official/deputy fire marshal, three battalion chiefs, an administrative assistant, and a management analyst. Its resources include five fire stations, an administrative building, a fire training center, and eight front-line emergency apparatus. These are comprised of five medic/ALS engine companies, one aerial truck company, one ALS medic squad, and one battalion chief vehicle, working a 48/96 schedule (two consecutive 24-hour shifts, followed by four consecutive days off). Hemet Fire cross staffs a Type 3 wildland engine, an OES Type 1 engine, an OES Type 3 wildland unit, a medic unit, a hazardous materials response squad/trailer, an air bottle refill trailer, and two utility vehicles. Each engine is staffed with a fire captain, fire engineer and paramedic/firefighter. Ambulance transport services are provided under contract by American Medical Response, Inc. (AMR). Hemet Fire responds to over 14,000 calls for emergency services each year.

History[]

The Hemet Fire Department was founded on July 29, 1908 as a volunteer organization, consisting of 12 firemen, a two-wheeled hose cart, nozzles, buckets, axes, two fire extinguishers, and a 30-foot extension ladder.
