The Hartford Fire Department is a career department that protects the city of Hartford, the state capital and Connecticut's fourth-largest city. They respond to a wide variety of hazards, including the sizeable and historic state capitol (as well as associated state government buildings), multiple high rises in downtown, a large convention center, a 16,000 seat arena (the XL Center), the minor league Hartford Yard Goats baseball stadium, an art museum, the Connecticut Science Center, a popular theater (The Bushnell Performing Arts Center), two large hospital complexes (Hartford and St. Francis Hospitals), several large and popular parks, multiple busy highways, a combined train/bus station, numerous residential and commercial areas (including the Coltsville historic district, with several notable old factory buildings), and part of the Connecticut River. The Brainard Airport, located in the southern part of the city, has their own small fire department; for which HFD responds to as mutual aid.
