Hamerly Custom Productions Inc. was an American fire apparatus builder located in Shartlesville, Pennsylvania that sold trucks primarily in the mid-Atlantic states (NY to VA). Hamerly also acted as a sub contractor for fire truck bodies for the Mack MB and R series pumpers ordered through Mack dealers from 1973-1979.
History[]
Formed as a family-owned business between two brothers in 1974, Hamerly built about 1,000 pumpers, tankers, mini-pumpers and rescues on commercial and custom chassis. One of the Hamerly brothers started his career in the paint shop for neighboring Hahn Motors Inc. in Hamburg PA before venturing out on his own. Hamerly also did body work for Mack Trucks Inc. Fire Apparatus Division when a customer ordered a CF chassied aerial ladder from a Mack dealer with a Thibault, American LaFrance, Maxim, Pirsch, or LTI aerial. They also participated in two known Van Pelt ladders. They were innovators with fiberglass work and did many rehab jobs and rebuilds for wrecked apparatus.
Operations ceased in April of 1980 after the company was forced in bankruptcy without warning forcing some orders stalled on the line to be later finished by Swab, Welch, Conestoga, and Hahn. Eric D. Ruggeri serves as the official historian for the former company and maintains a wealth of data and the little remaining records.
