Area Served[]
Greater Sudbury is the largest city in northern Ontario. Formed through amalgamation in 2001, it is home to 160,000 people spread over an area of 3200 square kilometres. The terrain consists of rocky outcrops, mixed forest and some 300 lakes of various size. The population consists of an urban core (which itself is separated into distinct neighbourhoods over a large area) and several smaller communities.
Historically, the economy was dependent on mining and this sector is still extremely important to the city. Vale (formerly INCO) and Glencore Xstrata (formerly Falconbridge Nickel Mines) operate mines, mills, smelters and other facilities throughout the municipality, predominantly in the Copper Cliff, Falconbridge, Levack and Skead areas. Other mining companies are also present and the mining service sector is a major economic driver.
The city is also the major education, retail, health and government service centre for Northeastern Ontario. It's home to a university, two colleges and several government offices. It is also located at the intersection of the Trans-Canada Highway and Highway 69/400 to southern Ontario, and is an important rail junction point. Canadian Pacific operates a major yard in downtown Sudbury and Capreol is a Canadian National Railway divisional point.
Department Profile[]
Part of the city's Department of Emergency Services, which includes both fire and EMS, the city employs 107 career staff and 350 volunteer firefighters. Stations 1, 2, 3 and 4 in the urban core are staffed by career firefighters and Station 16 in Val Thèrese is a composite hall. All of the other stations are volunteer.
History[]
The City of Greater Sudbury was formed on January 1st, 2001 through an amalgamation of seven municipalities and surrounding unorganized areas. Eight fire services were merged to form the new fire department:
- Sudbury Fire Department
- Valley East Fire Department
- Capreol Fire Department
- Nickel Centre Fire Department
- Onaping Falls Fire Department
- Rayside-Balfour Fire Department
- Walden Fire Department
- Red Deer Lake Fire Protection Team
Areas of Wanup formerly covered by the Estaire-Wanup Volunteer Fire Brigade were also included.

Future Plans[]
In June 2024, the City of Greater Sudbury called RFP for architectural services for the city's fire and paramedic services station revitalization plan. The RFP encompasses the first phase of the plan, which will see:
- The replacement of Station 2 with a new facility in the Second Avenue / Kingsway area by the end of 2026.
- The replacement of Station 20 with a new facility in Garson. This building will consolidate Stations 20 and 21, also by the end of 2026. Proposed locations are on Church Street south of the existing hall and on the southeast side of the Falconbridge Highway.
- The renovation of Stations 1, 4 and 16 by the end of 2028. Cost comparisons between renovation and replacement have been requested.
The second phase of the plan, scheduled for 2028 and beyond, would see a new station in Lively to replace existing Stations 5, 6 and 7 and a new station in Wahnapitae replacing Stations 23 and 24. Stations 3, 8, 10, 11, 12, 14 and 18 would be renovated. Station 18's expansion would include space for paramedics, who currently operate from a separate station.
