- 1874 - GIFD established on June 18
- 1909 - Paid Chief and two fire-fighters hired
- 1921 - Changed from a combination organization to a fully paid professional department
- 1957 - Fire Station 2 opened
- 1964 - Added Deputy Chief, Training Chief, and Fire Marshal to Chief’s ranks
- 1964 - Fire Code adopted and inspections began
- 1982 - Paramedic Supervisor added to Chief ranks and advanced life support response began
- 1987 - Fire Station 3 opened
- 1996 - Fire Station 4 opened
- 2007 - Fire Station 1 moved to Fonner Park
