History[]

On February 24, 1877, the Fresno Volunteer Fire Department (FVFD) was organized as the Fresno Hook and Ladder Company, thereby holding the distinction of being one of the oldest fire departments in the nation. The Fresno Fire Commission was formed in May 14, 1881, had two cisterns installed and later a fire engine in July 1884 from a firehouse on I Street. In 1886, one year after Fresno’s incorporation, the city leaders took over responsibility for fire protection and hired a professional staff, purchased proper equipment and built the city’s first permanent station, which doubled as City Hall. In 2006, the Fresno Fire Department entered into a contract to provide fire service to the Fig Garden Fire Protection District. This contract is currently effective through 2035.[1] In 2007, Fresno Fire contracted to man and maintain apparatus and stations of the North Central Fire Protection District. On June 21, 2018, the NCFP District Board of Directors unanimously voted to move forward with hiring its own employees, thereby re-staffing the District's fire stations and apparatus, and terminating the contract with Fresno Fire effective July 21, 2019.
