History[]

The Fredericton Fire Department was founded in 1817. The Town of Marysville and Villages of Barkers Point and Nashwaaksis were annexed by the City of Fredericton in 1973, amalgamating the Barkers Point Fire Department, Marysville Fire Department and Nashwaaksis Fire Department with the FFD.

Department Profile[]

The FFD serves a population of 84,000 operating from 4 stations within 2 Districts, namely the South Side District (Stations 1 and 3) and the North Side District (Stations 2 and 4). The FFD responds to most medical emergency callouts in partnership with Ambulance New Brunswick. Operational staffing is 96 full time firefighters including Lieutenants, Captains and Platoon Captains assigned to the Suppression Division, as well as a contingent of holiday relief firefighters who are currently employed year around without layoff or vacation, all operating on a four platoon system. Minimum staffing per shift is 17 personnel, staffing two Quints (4 firefighters each), two Engines (3 firefighters each) and one Rescue (2 firefighters). There is also a Platoon Captain on each shift.

Non-bargaining/Management personnel have increased to a team of 9 including the Fire Chief, Deputy Fire Chief, Assistant Deputy Chiefs of Operations, Prevention & Life Safety, Change Initiatives & Performance Management, Public Safety Communications Manager, Safety Services Manager, and a Dispatch Services Manager and Assistant Manager. A tenth position of Professional Development Specialist also closed in March and is yet to be announced.

The Fire Prevention Bureau is led by the Assistant Deputy Chief of Fire Prevention & Life Safety, and staffed by a Captain and 3 other investigators.

Bid Requests[]

  • The City of Fredericton called tender P23-28 for the supply and delivery of a tandem quint aerial and a rescue fire truck. The aerial is to be quartered at Station 2, the rescue will become Rescue 2. The deadline for submissions was 12 July 2023. As of Nov 14, 2024 the contract has not been assigned a vendor.

Future Plans[]

  • The fire department has proposed a new Station 5 location near Prospect Street and the Hanwell Road in order to improve fire suppression and prevention coverage to the south-western corner of the city. Chief Killingbeck said if work on the new station is approved to begin next year (2025), the goal would be to have staff trained, and the station built and equipped to open at the beginning of 2028.
