Overview[]

The Franklin Fire Department is a combination fire department providing fire suppression, technical rescue, ALS emergency medical services and fire prevention activities to the City of Franklin, located in central New Hampshire. The department is also the transporting ambulance service for the neighboring town of Andover, New Hampshire.

The Franklin Fire Department is made up of the following full time members:

  • (1) Chief of Department
  • (1) Deputy Chief
  • (4) Captains
  • (1) Inspectional Captain
  • (10) Firefighters
  • (1) Inspector
  • (1) Secretary

Chief officers, inspectors and the secretary work normal office hours. There are four shifts of a Captain and two Firefighters working a 24-hours on/48-hours off/24-hours on/96-hours off schedule with the two additional firefighters assigned to supplemental daytime coverage, each working a two 12-hour day shifts/2 days off schedule. Uniformed personnel below the rank of Deputy Chief are affiliated with IAFF Local 4711, the Franklin Professional Firefighters.

The Franklin Fire Department also utilizes on-call firefighters to supplement the full time personnel. This includes the following members:

  • (1) Call Captain
  • (1) Call Lieutenant
  • (6) Call Firefighters

The department is a founding member of the Lakes Region Mutual Fire Aid Association which consists of 35 fire, EMS and HazMat agencies in central New Hampshire. The Department is dispatched from the Lakes Region Mutual Fire Aid Communications Center located in Laconia, New Hampshire and the department's radio identification number is 7.

Charles Dodge Fireman Sept. 26, 1926 While responding to a false alarm, thrown from ladder truck after it swerved to avoid a car and struck a tree.
Robert Cunningham Deputy Chief March 10, 1952 While fighting a fire in an antique shop on Feb. 21, 1951, his metal helmet came into contact with live electrical wires. He was severely injured and died over a year later without returning to duty.
Maurice Street Jacques Fireman Aug. 12, 1975 Suffered a heart attack while fighting a house fire.
