Kitchener Fire Department

History

From its founding in 1854 to 1916, Kitchener was known as Berlin. Its name was changed during the First World War in honour of the British Field Marshal, Horatio Herbert Kitchener.

• In December 2021, the City of Kitchener awarded a contract to KME for two new pumpers and three new aerials from 2022 to approximately 2025. The order for aerials consists of a 75-80' single axle ladder, a 100-110' tandem axle ladder and a 100-110' tandem axle platform.

Future Plans

• The City of Kitchener is looking to hire 20 more firefighters and open an eighth fire station to meet the demands of the department's increasing call volume. The new station is slated to open in 2026.
