Area Served[]

The Escondido Fire Department (EFD) provides fire protection and emergency medical services for the city of Escondido and, through a contractual arrangement established in 1984, for the Rincon Del Diablo Fire Protection District, both located some 30.6 miles northeast of downtown San Diego, in North San Diego County, Southern California. The city's name was derived from the Spanish name "Escondido" meaning "hidden". One source says the name originally referred to "agua escondida" or "hidden water"; another says it meant "hidden treasure". Incorporated as a city on October 8, 1888, Escondido encompasses an area covering 50 square miles and serves a population of approximately 153,614 inhabitants. Escondido is bordered by the the City of San Marcos to the northwest, the unincorporated community of Valley Center to the northeast; the City of Poway and the unincorporated community of Rancho San Bernardo to the south and the San Pasqual Valley, the northernmost community of the city of San Diego, to the southeast. The city proper is further surrounded by several sparsely populated unincorporated communities such as Jesmond Dene and Hidden Meadows to the north; Rincon Del Diablo to the southeast; and Felicita Park to the southwest.

Mutual Aid[]

EFD has mutual aid agreements with San Diego County Fire, the Poway Fire Department, the San Marcos Fire Department, the Valley Center Fire Protection District and the CAL FIRE San Diego Unit.

Department Profile[]

The Escondido Fire Department consists of a staff of 93 full-time safety (including chief officers), 18 full-time non-safety, 10 full-time administration, 3 part-time administration, and 20 support volunteers, working out of seven (7) fire stations. Fire Station 1 has a fire museum, a training classroom, and a regional training facility including a four story burn tower, a roof prop, a State Fire Marshal certified confined space training prop and a vehicle fire simulation prop. EFD is organized into an Administration Division, an Operations Division, a Fire Prevention Division, and a Support Services Division. Daily operations staffing is 36 personnel in three operational shifts working a 48/96 work schedule. EFD's management team consists of a fire chief, a fire deputy chief, a division chief, a deputy fire marshal, three battalion chiefs, an administrative manager, an EMS program coordinator, and an emergency/disaster preparedness manager. EFD respond to approximately 15,500 calls for service throughout the City of Escondido and the unincorporated San Diego county area of Rincon del Diablo annually, the majority of which are medical calls.

California Task Force 8[]

The Escondido Fire Department is a member agency of California Task Force 8 (CA-TF8).

History[]

During the 1890s, fire protection for the City of Escondido was provided by a group of volunteers using a hand-drawn cart and garden hose to extinguish fires. The hose cart, made up of two buggy wheels joined by a drum, was stationed at City Hall on Valley Boulevard, standing ready on a platform serviced by a six-foot ramp. In 1905, a volunteer fire company was formed and officers were elected. In 1914, Escondido purchased its first fire truck, a Federal Chemical Wagon, for $3,965. It was parked in the old Central Garage at the southwest corner of Ohio Avenue and Broadway. In 1924, the volunteers were organized into a fire department. The Rincon del Diablo Fire District, which served much of the unincorporated area around Escondido, contracted for service with the Escondido Fire Department in 1984, establishing Escondido's fifth fire station located on South Felicita Avenue.
