Overview[]

The Elizabeth Fire Department is a career agency that employs around 276 firefighters. Elizabeth is the fourth largest city in the State of NJ having a population of 137,000 residents in an area of about 13 square miles. Elizabeth FD also provides emergency medical service on the BLS level.

History[]

Protection Steam Fire Engine Company No. 1 and Lafayette Hook & Ladder Company No. 1 were organized in 1837, Rolla Engine Company No. 2 was organized in 1852, Washington Engine Company No. 3 was organized in 1841, Red Jacket Engine Company No. 4 was organized in 1855, Hibernia Engine Company No. 5 was organized in 1866, Jefferson Engine Company No. 6 and Jackson Hook & Ladder Company No. 2 were organized in 1868. The Elizabeth Fire Department became a paid department on January 1, 1902.
