History[]
At a special election held on September 11, 1962, voters in the Lake Tapps area approved the formation of Pierce County Fire Protection District No. 22 with 83 “yes” votes to 2 “no” votes. The district was established by the Pierce County Commissioners on October 1, 1962.[1]
On November 2, 1999, voters approved the merger of Pierce County Fire Protection District No. 24 (Bonney Lake) into Pierce County Fire District 22 (Lake Tapps), and the annexation of the City of Bonney Lake into Fire District 22 with a combined 7,636 "yes" votes and 1,332 "no" votes across the 3 agencies.[2] All 3 agencies had previously consolidated together since 1995 under the current 'East Pierce Fire & Rescue' name.[3] The merger was effective on January 1, 2000.
On May 16, 2006, voters approved the merger of Pierce County Fire Protection District No. 12 (Buckley) and Pierce County Fire Protection District No. 20 (South Prairie) into East Pierce Fire with a combined 1,561 "yes" votes and 250 "no" votes.[4]
On April 22, 2008, voters approved the merger of Pierce County Fire Protection District No. 1 (Sumner), and the annexation of the City of Sumner into East Pierce Fire with a combined 1,637 "yes" votes and 186 "no" votes.[5] The 2 agencies had both previously contracted services from East Pierce since 2006.
On February 9, 2010, voters approved the merger of Pierce County Fire Protection District No. 8 (Edgewood) into East Pierce Fire with 2,773 "yes" votes and 642 "no" votes.[6] The merger was effective on April 1, 2010. The district had previously contracted services from East Pierce since late 2007.
On April 23, 2013, voters approved the annexation of Milton Fire Department (Washington) into East Pierce Fire with a combined 10,905 "yes" votes and 1,768 "no" votes.[7] The City of Milton had previously contracted services from East Pierce since 2010.
On August 6, 2013, the Pierce County Council approved the request of the Board of Fire Commissioners for the district's legal name to be changed from 'Pierce County Fire Protection District No. 22' to 'East Pierce Fire & Rescue'.[8]
On June 18, 2014, the Town of Wilkeson withdrew from East Pierce Fire and Rescue and contracted for service with the Buckley Fire Department and the Carbonado Fire Department. Wilkeson had contracted with East Pierce for 8 years, since 2006, when Fire District 12 merged with East Pierce. Previously, the Town of Wilkeson had contracted servies from Fire District 12.[9][10]
