Jefferson County Fire Protection District No. 1 operates as East Jefferson Fire Rescue.

History[]

On May 29, 1948, voters in the Chimacum Valley region approved the formation of Jefferson County Fire Protection District No. 1 with 89 "yes" votes to 4 "no" votes. The district was officially formed on June 9, 1948.[1]

On November 8, 2005, voters approved the merger of Jefferson County Fire Protection District No. 6 (Cape George) into Jefferson County Fire Protection District No. 1 (Chimacum) with 1,890 "yes" votes 246 "no" votes.[2] The merger was effective on January 1, 2006. The City of Port Townsend signed a 20 year contract for services from Fire District 1, effective on January 1, 2007.[3] On February 12, 2019, voters in Fire District 1 and the City of Port Townsend approved annexation of the city into the district with a combined 5,186 "yes" votes and 2,383 "no" votes.[4] On November 8, 2022 voters approved the merger of Jefferson County Fire Protection District No. 3 (Port Ludlow) into Fire District 1 with 2,571 "yes" votes and 364 "no" votes.[5] The merger was effective on January 1, 2023.
