History[]
Harrietsfield is located south of Halifax. Initially, the area was covered by the Spryfield Fire Department, and Spryfield continued to provide service after the department was formed. Trucks were initially stored in a backyard, then a basement garage until the first fire station was built in 1974. In 1989, Harrietsfield-Sambro Fire Rescue became District 5 West Fire Department.
In 1996, District 5 West and the other fire departments of Halifax County were amalgamated to form the Halifax Regional Fire and Emergency Service.
