Canada's Department of National Defence (DND) is the federal government department responsible for the Canadian Armed Forces. Within the DND, Canadian Forces Fire & Emergency Services provide fire protection for most military installations across Canada.

Many base fire departments are staffed by civilian DND employees. However, shipboard and air base firefighting is conducted by military firefighters.

Larger Canadian military installations are known as Canadian Forces Bases (CFB) (or Base des forces canadiennes (BFC) in French) and smaller facilities as Canadian Forces Stations (CFS) (or Station des forces canadiennes (SFC) in French). Air bases also have a numbered Wing designation (3 Wing, 11 Wing) and Army bases have a brigade designation.

The Canadian Armed Forces was itself created through the amalgamation of the Canadian Army, Royal Canadian Air Force (RCAF) and Royal Canadian Navy (RCN) into a unified military service in 1968. Prior to that, each branch operated its own fire service. The names of the historic services were reinstated in 2011, but the fire services remain a DND function.
