The United States Department of Defense is the department of the federal government responsible for coordinating and supervising all agencies and functions of the U.S. government directly related to the U.S. Armed Forces and national security.

There are six main branches of the United States Armed Forces:

  • United States Air Force
  • United States Space Force
  • United States Army
  • United States Coast Guard (only on transfer from DHS)
  • United States Marine Corps
  • United States Navy

Each service operates bases, singly or in combination with other branches, in the United States and other countries around the world. Fire protection is provided by military or civilian firefighters, depending on the location. Military base fire departments are usually separate from area civilian fire departments, although they will often work in cooperation and are encouraged to be part of area mutual aid services.
