The City of Dallas is the third most populous city in Texas (after Houston and San Antonio) and the largest city in, and seat of, Dallas County with portions extending into Collin, Denton, Kaufman and Rockwall counties. Located in north-central Texas and incorporated as a city on February 2, 1856, Dallas has a population of approximately 1,304,379, and encompasses an area covering 385.9 square miles, The city makes up one-fifth of the much larger urbanized area known as the Dallas/Fort Worth Metroplex, in which one-quarter of all Texans live. Dallas is bordered by the cities of Farmers Branch. Carrollton, Addison, Hebron, Plano, and Richardson to the north, the City of Garland to the northeast, the cities of Mesquite and Balch Springs to the east, the cities of Seagoville, Hutchins, Lancaster, Wilmer, DeSoto, Duncanville, and Cedar Hill to the south, and the cities of Arlington, Grand Prairie, and Irving to the west.

Urban Search and Rescue[]

Dallas Fire Rescue is a participating agency in both FEMA Urban Search and Rescue Texas A&M Task Force 1 (TX-TF1) as well as Texas Task Force 2 (TX-TF2). Dallas was the sponsoring agency for TX-TF2 until 2017 when the Texas A&M Engineering Extension Service (TEEX) took over management of both teams.[1]

Department Profile[]

The Dallas Fire-Rescue Department (DFR) is a comprehensive emergency service agency that serves the City of Dallas, Texas, the 3rd largest city in Texas. DFR provides fire protection, medical response, and numerous special operations disciplines to serve the 1.3 million residents of the city. The department operates from 59 fire stations, separated into 10 battalions that are strategically located throughout the city. DFR covers 385 square miles of diverse geographic and urban areas, including a dense urban core, the nation’s largest urban forest, and the 35-square mile Lake Ray Hubbard. The department consists of over 2,000 employees, including civilian support personnel. Last year, DFR responded to over 275,000 calls for service. DFR is organized into 4 bureaus, which are: administration, safety & wellness, emergency response, communications & logistics, financial & personnel support, prevention & investigations, and training & fleet. Each of these bureaus are led by either an assistant chief or assistant director (non-sworn).

History[]

DFR was founded on July 4, 1872 after a large fire in 1860 left only one building standing.

Radio Channels[]

DFR operates on Dallas Layer 1, which is a digital non-encrypted P25 Phase II system. Dallas Layer 1 is listed under the North Texas Interoperable Radio Network (NTIRN). DFR also has multiple conventional simplex UHF channels for tactical operations

Apparatus[]

DFD is making the switch from Spartan ER to Pierce Manufacturing apparatus. The first Pierce in department history was purchased in 2011. Before Spartan, DFRD used American LaFrance, Ward LaFrance, Grumman, and Webb apparatus.

History[]

After a large fire in July of 1860, the Dallas city council created "Fire Company Number 1" on July 4th, 1872. In 1873 a horse-drawn steam pumper was purchased. In 1875 a hook and ladder was purchased to form "Hook and Ladder Company 1." Shortly after an identical Silsby hook and ladder was purchased for "Hook and Ladder Company 2." With further development away from the Trinity River, a water supply system was established. Six large cisterns were built. 5 of them held 600 barrels of water, with one holding 1200 barrels. In July of 1902, a large fire occurred at the intersection of Haskell and Simpson streets; destroying 25 houses. The fire tragically took the life of 2 firefighters and 15 other were injured. In 1885, the fire department became a paid department, with members receiving a wage of $60 per month. In 1910, the first motorized fire apparatus was purchased from Webb Fire Apparatus.
