Area Served[]

Crescent City Fire & Rescue (CCFR) provides fire protection and emergency medical services for the City of Crescent City, located in Del Norte County, Northern California, approximately 20 miles south of the Oregon border. In addition, CCFR serves the the Crescent Fire Protection District communities of Bertsch-Oceanview, Church Tree, Northcrest, and Old Mill. Incorporated as a city on April 13, 1854, and named for the crescent-shaped stretch of sandy beach south of the city, Crescent City encompasses an area covering 2.42 square miles, and serves a population of approximately 6,673 inhabitants. Including the four unincorporated communities of the Crescent Fire Protection District, the department's total jurisdiction covers 28.4 square miles, which includes Del Norte County Regional Airport and Pelican Bay State Prison, while protecting over 19,500 residents. The Crescent Fire Protection District is bordered by the Tolowa Dunes State Park and Lake Earl Wildlife Area, as well as by Lake Earl, and by the Fort Dick Fire Protection District to the north; by the Jedediah Smith Redwoods State Park, the Redwood National Park and the Siskiyou Mountains to the east; by the Klamath Fire Protection District and by the Del Norte Coast Redwoods State Park to the south; and by the Atlantic Ocean to the west.

Mutual Aid[]

CCFR has mutual aid agreements with the CAL FIRE Humboldt-Del Norte Unit, the United States Forest Service, the Fort Dick Fire Protection District, the Gasquet Fire Protection District, the Klamath Fire Protection District, the Pelican Bay State Prison Fire Department, the Smith River Fire Protection District, and the Harbor Rural Fire Protection District in neighboring Curry County, Oregon.

Crescent City Fire & Rescue is combination fire department with 7 paid career members (1 fire chief, 1 deputy fire chief, 3 fire captains, 1 administrative assistant, and 1 fire house maintenance worker), augmented by up to 20 active volunteer firefighters. The department fields a dedicated duty officer each day, who is responsible for monitoring the radio at all times and ensuring an appropriate response to all calls for service. Crescent City Fire & Rescue responded to 2,067 calls for service in 2024.

History[]

The Crescent City Fire Department was established as a volunteer organization in 1900, while the Crescent Fire Protection District was formed in 1949. In 2015, the Crescent City Volunteer Fire Department and the Crescent Fire Protection District merged to form Crescent City Fire & Rescue.
