Area Served[]

The Coronado Fire Department (CFD) provides fire protection and emergency medical services for the City of Coronado, a resort beachside city situated on a peninsula between San Diego Bay and the Pacific Ocean. Coronado is located across the bay from the City of San Diego, in San Diego County, southern California. Coronado is Spanish for "Crowned," derived from the Los Coronados Islands, an offshore Mexican archipelago, The city was incorporated on December 11, 1890, has a population of approximately 20,192, and encompasses an area covering 32.50 square miles. Coronado is bordered by Naval Air Station North Island on the north, by San Diego Bay on the north and east, by Naval Amphibious Base Coronado on the Silver Strand sandbar, which connects the peninsula to the mainland, the City of Imperial Beach on the south, and by the Pacific Ocean on the west. The city is connected with the City of San Diego via the San Diego–Coronado Bridge.

Department Profile[]

The Coronado Fire Department is budgeted for 41.5 full-time employees, 38 sworn and 3.5 non-sworn/support staff, and seasonal/temporary beach lifeguards and lifeguard assistants to provide structural firefighting, emergency medical response, disaster preparedness, beach lifeguard services, fire investigation, code enforcement, and public education to the citizens of Coronado. Its resources include two fire stations, and four front-line emergency apparatus comprised of one engine company, one aerial ladder truck company, one ALS paramedic rescue ambulance, and one battalion chief vehicle, working three 24-hour rotating shifts. In addition, Coronado Fire cross staffs one California OES Type 1 engine company. The department consists 4 divisions, Operations, Emergency Medical Services, Fire Prevention & Training, and Beach Lifeguards, each headed by a battalion chief and, in the case of the lifeguards, by a beach lifeguard captain. Daily operations staffing is 10 personnel. The engine company is staffed with a fire captain, a fire engineer, and a firefighter/paramedic. The truck company is staffed with a fire captain, a fire engineer. and two firefighter/paramedics. The rescue ambulance is staffed with two firefighter/paramedic, and the battalion command vehicle is staffed with a battalion chief. Coronado Fire responded to 2,027 incidents during 2020, 1,632 of which were medical calls.

Dispatch[]

The National City Fire Department receives its dispatch services from San Diego Fire-Rescue's dispatch center, the Emergency Command and Data Center (ECDC), commonly referred to as "Metro." The ECDC dispatches for San Diego Fire Department as well as for 5 other agencies in the county, including CFD. The other agencies being Chula Vista Fire Department, National City Fire Department, Imperial Beach Fire Department, and Poway Fire Department. These agencies form the "Metro Zone."

The Coronado Fire Department is a member agency of California Task Force 8 (CA-TF8).

History[]

Coronado Engine Company No. 1 was organized on April 22, 1886, manned by volunteers, and the following February it was announced that bids for the erection of an engine house for its use would be advertised for. The Coronado Fire Department was officially formed in 1892.
