History[]
The Compton Fire Department was established in 1901.
Area Served[]
The Compton Fire Department provides fire protection and emergency medical services for the city of Compton located 14.9 miles southeast of downtown Los Angeles in southern Los Angeles County. Compton takes its name from Griffith Dickenson Compton (August 22, 1820 - January 24, 1905), who led thirty pioneer families into the area in 1867. Incorporated as a city in 1888 and known as the Hub City because of its location in nearly the exact geographical center of Los Angeles County, the City of Compton is one of the oldest cities in the county and the eighth to incorporate. It encompasses an area covering 10.1 square miles which includes general aviation Compton/Woodley Airport, and serves a population of approximately 96,456. Compton is bordered by unincorporated Willowbrook on the north and northwest, unincorporated West Compton on the west, the City of Carson on the southwest, unincorporated Rancho Dominguez on the south, the City of Long Beach on the southeast, the City of Paramount and unincorporated East Compton on the east, and by the City of Lynwood on the northeast. All of these, with the exception of Long Beach, receive fire protection from the Los Angeles County Fire Department.
Mutual Aid[]
The Compton Fire Department has mutual aid agreements with the Los Angeles County Fire Department, the Downey Fire Department (California), the Montebello Fire Department and the Santa Fe Springs Department of Fire-Rescue.
Department Profile[]
The department is budgeted for 84 full time fire suppression employees and 5 civilian employees. Its resources include four fire stations and nine front-line emergency vehicles comprised of four engine companies, one truck company, two paramedic rescue squads, two basic life support transport ambulances, one air & light unit, and one battalion chief vehicle, working three 24-hour rotating shifts. In addition. Compton FD cross staffs an OES Type-6 wildland unit and maintains the James Shern Fire Academy, partnering with Compton Community College to provide an accredited program of Firefighter Training. Compton Fire responds to an average of 10,000 emergency calls per year, approximately 75% of those are for Emergency Medical Services (EMS).
Dispatch[]
All emergency and non-emergency responses by the Compton and Downey Fire Departments, as well as the Santa Fe Springs Department of Fire Rescue are initiated, dispatched, and managed from and by the Downey Fire Communications Center (DFCC). The DFCC employs a total of 11 dispatchers; 8 full-time, 2 part-time and 1 Supervisor who also assists in the center as needed. The dispatchers work 12 hour shifts with the minimum staffing for each shift being 2 dispatchers.
California Regional Task Force 2[]
The Compton Fire Department is a member agency of California Office of Emergency Services Regional Task Force 2 (CA-RTF-2).
